Circularity is operational, not aspirational
Plenty of companies say they are circular. Far fewer can point to the specific, repeatable operations that make it true. Circularity is not a value statement; it is a playbook — a handful of concrete moves you run on every load.
Here is the playbook we run, distilled from years of doing it, so you can copy the parts that fit your operation.
Play one and two: buy used, recondition first
The first play is defaulting to used and reconditioned boxes for every load that does not specifically require new. That single habit cuts cost and embodied carbon across the board and reserves new board for the genuine exceptions.
The second is reconditioning before replacing. When a box is tired, fix what is fixable — flaps, height, corners, liners — before spending on a new one. The board is the value; keep it in service.
Play three and four: upcycle, then recover
Plays three and four close the gaps. Upcycling captures board too worn to ship; backhaul recovery brings packaging home cheaply on trucks already running. Between them, there stops being a category of packaging with nowhere circular to go.
- Upcycle board that cannot ship into dunnage, dividers and goods.
- Recover spent and surplus corrugated via backhaul, not dumpsters.
- Route everything down the ladder to its highest remaining use.
“Reuse first, recycle last, landfill never — that is the whole playbook in six words.”
Play five: measure it
The final play is measurement. Track diversion tonnage, the reuse-to-recycle split, and estimated avoided emissions. What gets measured gets managed — and gets reported credibly in your ESG disclosures.
Measurement also keeps the other four plays honest. It is how you know circularity is happening rather than just being claimed.
Running the playbook together
No single play makes a supply chain circular. Buying used without recovery still leaks packaging; recovery without upcycling still bales good fiber. The power is in running all five as a system, on every load, until the loop actually closes.
You do not have to build it alone. Most of these plays are services we already run — tell us your operation and we will help you stand up the playbook one move at a time.
