The short version

Dimensional-weight pricing bills parcels on size, not just weight, so oversized boxes cost extra even when light. Right-sizing cartons to the product cuts both the dim-weight fee and the void fill you buy — often the biggest quick win in a shipping budget.

What dim weight is

Carriers figured out long ago that a big, light box takes up truck space they could sell to someone else. So they bill parcels on dimensional weight — a figure derived from the box’s size — and charge you on whichever is greater, actual or dimensional weight.

The practical result: ship a light product in an oversized box and you pay for air. Multiply that across thousands of parcels and it becomes one of the largest, most invisible lines in a freight budget.

The double cost of oversizing

Oversizing hits you in two places at once. The carrier bills you for the dimensional weight of the too-big box, and you spend money on void fill to stop the product rattling around inside it.

Right-sizing kills both at the same time. A box that fits the product needs little or no fill and carries little or no dim-weight penalty.

An oversized box charges you twice — once for the empty space you ship, and again for the fill you buy to plug it.

How to right-size in practice

You will rarely need a unique box per product. A well-chosen set of a handful of sizes usually covers the bulk of an outbound mix with far less wasted cube.

  • Profile your top SKUs and the boxes they actually ship in today.
  • Find the smallest box that safely fits each with minimal void.
  • Standardize on a tighter range of sizes to unlock volume pricing.
  • Cut down or source boxes to match, rather than forcing products into stock sizes.

Where used and custom-cut boxes help

Right-sizing is easier when you are not locked into a supplier’s stock dimensions. Because we carry hundreds of used sizes and can cut boxes down to a target height, you can match the box to the product instead of the other way around.

A custom cut-down on a used box often costs less than the dim-weight fees it eliminates over a single season of shipping.

Measuring the win

Pick your highest-volume parcel, calculate its current dimensional weight, and compare it against a right-sized box. The per-parcel saving looks small; the annual number rarely does.

Send us your top profiles and target dimensions and we will help you build a right-sized, mostly-used box set that trims dim weight and fill at the same time.
